Anxiety-Busting Aromatherapy

Change………’s everywhere! And if you are reading these words, then most likely you have experienced some sort of change during your lifetime.

During times of change, anxiety levels rise. But you will be happy to know that you have an ally when it comes to working through anxiety, and that ally is Aromatherapy!

Aromatherapy is a wonderful healing tool to help relieve anxiety. How do I know? Because I have experienced these healing benefits first hand in my own journey with anxiety.

In this article, you will discover my top 7 essential oils to reduce anxiety and tomorrow, I’ll share 5 ways in which you can put these magic essences to work for you!

But first let me tell you what Aromatherapy is and what essential oils are.

Here is a definition of Aromatherapy as defined by Robert Tisserand:

“Aromatherapy is a caring, hands-on therapy which seeks to induce
relaxation, to increase energy, to reduce the effects of stress and to restore
lost balance to mind, body and soul.”

He also goes on to say that:

“Aromatherapy conveys the concept of healing with aromatic

“Essential oils, as defined by The National Association for Holistic
Aromatherapy, are the highly concentrated aromatic extracts which are
distilled from a variety of aromatic plant material including grasses,
leaves, flowers, needles & twigs, peel of fruit, wood and roots.”

How lucky are we to have these amazing, healing and wonderful-smelling essences at our fingertips? Muy lucky!

So how can you transform anxiety with aromatherapy?

By using your senses as a pathway to presence!

Namely by using your sense of smell to catapult you into the present

Let’s use the example of warm cinnamon buns just coming out
of the oven. I can smell them already! Can you? Since your brain can only
think one thought at a time, you cannot think ‘I’m so anxious’, at the same
time you are thinking, ‘Mmmm, those cinnamon buns smell scrumptious’.

Scent stops your thoughts in its tracks.

Need another example? Ok… are doing something in your house by a
window which is open. The scent of a skunk comes flowing through your
window and right up your nose. Need I say more? 🙂

7 Essential Oils To Use!

Let’s now go over my top 7 essential oils for anxiety relief. By
no means is this an all-inclusive list of essential oils that can be used for
anxiety. Everyone is different when it comes to scents. I invite you to
experiment with these and other essential oils to see what works best for
you. But these are good ones to start with due to their calming effects.

Essential oils have many naturally occurring chemical components to them
and the ones that have a more calming and sedative effect are those that
contain a higher percentage of esters. However, essential oils are made
up of many different chemical components and that is why one essential
oil may have numerous benefits and these benefits can help various body
systems such as digestive, circulatory, the skin etc.

**Important Note: Before using any essential oils, check with your medical
practitioner if you have any health concerns or conditions or if you are
pregnant or nursing. You can also check out more about
aromatherapy and essential oil safety information here

Ok, now on to the top 7 essential oils for anxiety relief.

1. Ylang ylang

Ylang ylang is sweet, exotic, floral and a little spicy. It is
known to be an aphrodisiac. It is calming to the nervous system and brings
harmony to the mind and helps relieve restlessness and agitation. Ylang
ylang is a tropical evergreen tree & the essential oil comes from the flowers.

2. Bergamot

Bergamot helps to calm and relax the senses as well as
aiding with emotional imbalances which tend to be activated during times
of change. Its scent is refreshing and uplifting, yet relaxing. Bergamot has
a beautiful fresh, fruity-floral aroma. This essential oil comes from the rind
of citrus fruit which is still unripe and green from the bitter orange tree.

3. Geranium rose

Geranium rose relaxes the nerves and calms anxiety.
It helps keep you centered and at ease which is very welcoming to many
during times of change. It has a sweet, floral, rose-like scent. Extra side
note…it is also excellent for balancing the hormones.

4. Mandarin

Mandarin has a calming effect on the central nervous system. You can also substitute sweet orange essential oil which is usually easier to find because it is more popular. Sweet orange is uplifting and beneficial for sadness, nervousness and anxiety.

**Special Note: Mandarin, sweet orange and bergamot are all phototoxic meaning it should not be used on your skin if you are going to be outdoors in the sun because it can cause extra sensitivity in your skin.

5. Sandalwood

Sandalwood’s main element is the earth element so it is very grounding, being rooted in stillness and prayer. It has a sweet, woody, musk-like scent and has a calming effect on the nervous system making it another wonderful essential oil for anxiety relief. Sandalwood is an evergreen tree and the essential oil is extracted from the tree’s heartwood.

**Special Note: I use only the santalum spicatum Sandalwood species
due to the fact that Sandalwood has become endangered due to the over-
harvesting of the trees for its aromatic oil.

6. Roman Chamomile

Roman chamomile has a very distinct scent. It is sweet and slightly fruity. When using this essential oil it is best to add one drop at a time because of its stronger scent which can overtake
a blend. Roman chamomile is known to help with relieving stress of any kind, including anxiety, which makes it one of your greatest allies in Aromatherapy. It also is known to help with chronic tension and insomnia. Roman chamomile is one of several species of herbs with daisy-like flowers which is where the essential oil is obtained.

7. Lavender

The last essential oil but not least for reducing anxiety is Lavender. Lavender is known as the Swiss army knife of essential oils because it is useful for so many ailments. It helps with almost any imbalance and is a great addition to your first aid kit. I keep a small vial of it in my purse just in case I get any minor cuts or burns or even to just inhale it right from the vial when I am feeling anxious. It has a rich, sweet, herbaceous, floral scent. Lavender is a very fragrant shrub and its essential oil is obtained from the flowers.

So now you know about ze top 7 anxiety-busting essential oils… tomorrow, Goddess Gina be teaching you how to use them! Tune in then, lovely aromatherapy healing goddess!

big big love you!

What if? A goddess retreat in tropical paradise!

So my darlinghearts,

My love said to me the other day, out of the blue:

Hon, how about we run a retreat here? I can help you organise it, and scope out places for it, and drive all the goddesses around when they are here. And you could do your goddess stuff with them, and we could take them to the waterfall and maybe the islands and the sea and to see the whales if they are here!

And it sounded divine.

So we are thinking of maybe, possibly doing one in September 2011.

And there’s a whole bundle load of things to work out of course…

but would that be something that sings to you?

A goddess retreat in tropical paradise in September 2011?

Is that long enough away to start saving?

Holy dinger, can you imagine??!!!?

May they bring you back into your core. Into who you are. Into your canoe, pointing your nose in the direction of where you want to go.

A Cacophony of Inspiration

Dear Best Friend aka Bestie aka Goddess BFF,

I’ve been collecting goodies. Vont to share them with you.

This is my little treasure trove of wisdom and laughter and goodness this week. Feeling sincerely blessed that there are so many good souls sharing their hearts and teachings and gifts with the world.

750 Words is cute & fun & simple. As is the creator’s website, Buster Benson. Holy dinger… it pops all my creative synapses!

I love The Sassy Minx’s sharing in response to my post from this week about The List Of What To Do When Everything Sucks. Lisa (aka ze sassy one) is one of my favourite peoples. I mean, just LOOK AT HER!

My favourites Pace + Kyeli have been really brave and courageous lately. They are totally following their spirits, and changing their business from the Freak Revolution to the Connection Revolution. They are making big, beautiful changes in this world. I especially loved Goddess Kyeli’s post on Sacrifice {and how good things grow when you let go of old things}.

Why I Don’t Care About Success by Zen Habits. Umm, DUDE. Can I please say Hell to the Yeah! This is why I stopped watching my RSS subscriber figures. This is why I stopped comparing my business to other people’s. The truth is, I’m ridiculously happy with my business. I love me, and I love you. And everything is going ridunkulously well, so I don’t need to fret about being any more successful than I am. And furthermore – I don’t need to be anybody but who I am. *big exhale* Amen.

Maggie Ann is another favourite of my heart. Her photos sing to me of spirit, mamahood & nature.

And another favourite. (Yus, everyone is my favourite, especially you). But my favourite Marissa wrote the most brilliant thing about Not Running Marathons. It could also be called Don’t Put Things On Your Things To Do This Life List That You Don’t Reaaaaaally Want To Do. A really ding dang good reminder. I think I will cross some off mine. Like changing my name to Leonie Cougar Mellancamp Allan. Hee!

Oh. And I just realised… that all of these brave, miracable {that’s not a word, but it is now. Miracle + remarkable = miracable} women are all Goddess sisters of mine. Holy dinger.

The Blue Zones age compass has been blowing my mind. Fill out the two minute quiz to find out your cellular age… and what you can do to extend it. Weeeooo!

That’s all.

I’m wishing you love, love, love, gladness and blessings for this weekend, dearest heart. Like a big exhale of air.

Heart you forever…
